Colombo, October 18 (Daily Mirror) - More than 2,100 people have been killed in road accidents in Sri Lanka so far this year, with an average of seven to eight lives lost daily, National Council for Road Safety Chairman Manjula Kularatne said.
He warned that road accidents continued to claim lives and leave families devastated, stressing the urgent need for motorists to adopt safer driving practices.
A moment of carelessness, excessive speeding or a poor decision behind the wheel could result in the loss of a loved one or deprive a family of its primary breadwinner, he cautioned.
Mr. Kularatne urged motorists to avoid speeding and reckless driving, refrain from using mobile phones while driving, and strictly obey traffic rules and signals.
He also said the importance of wearing helmets when riding motorcycles and seat belts when travelling in vehicles.
He called on all road users to exercise greater caution and take personal responsibility to prevent avoidable accidents and protect lives on Sri Lanka’s roads.
