Beyonce marked her 45th birthday on September 4, 2026, with a $2 million gift to the Studio Museum in Harlem, supporting an institution dedicated to artists of African descent and the exploration of Black culture through art.
Announced by her company, Parkwood Entertainment, the donation reflected her interest in art collecting and her appreciation for the museum's exhibitions, which introduced her to emerging Black artists whose work she admired. The gift came less than a year after the institution opened its purpose-built home in Harlem in November 2025. Founded in 1968, the museum continues to support artists through exhibitions, educational initiatives and professional development programmes.
Beyonce's gift and her connection to the museum
In her birthday announcement, Beyonce highlighted the role art plays in telling stories about the past and present, while noting that it is not always accessible to everyone. She praised the museum for its connection with the community and credited its exhibitions with introducing her to young and emerging Black artists. Thelma Golden, the museum's director and chief curator, thanked the singer for recognising the institution's contribution to Harlem, New York and audiences worldwide.
Golden said the gift would help strengthen the museum's work with those communities. Beyonce's interest in the institution connects her personal passion for collecting art with its mission to make the work of artists of African descent more visible.
A museum founded to champion Black artists
The Studio Museum in Harlem was founded in 1968 by artists, community activists and philanthropists seeking to create greater opportunities for artists of African descent.
At a time when their work was underrepresented in many major cultural institutions, the museum established a dedicated space for exhibitions, discussion and the preservation of Black artistic expression. Over the decades, it has developed an internationally recognised programme of exhibitions, public events and educational activities.
Its permanent collection contains nearly 9,000 artworks, documenting artistic contributions by artists of African descent from the 19th century to the present. The museum also connects artists with audiences and provides opportunities for professional development, helping emerging and established practitioners develop their work and reach wider audiences.
Its artist-in-residence programme supports emerging talent
The museum launched its Artist-in-Residence programme in 1969. Since then, it has supported more than 150 artists of African and Afro-Latinx descent, providing resources to develop their practices and establish professional connections.
Three artists are selected annually for an 11-month residency. Participants receive studio space, a stipend, research support and professional development opportunities.
Their work is presented in a culminating exhibition accompanied by a publication. The 2026 cohort comprised Derriann Pharr, Simonette Quamina and Taylor Simmons. They became the first residents to work in the museum's new building, with their residency running from March through October 2026.
The programme reflects the museum's commitment to supporting artists beyond exhibition opportunities by providing the time, resources and institutional support needed to develop their work.
The museum opened a new home in Harlem
On November 15, 2025, the museum opened its new seven-storey building at its longtime location on West 125th Street in Harlem. The 82,000-square-foot facility was designed by Adjaye Associates, with Cooper Robertson serving as executive architect.
The building includes exhibition galleries, educational facilities, flexible public spaces and a dedicated artist-in-residence centre. It more than doubled the space available for exhibitions and the residency programme while expanding areas for public engagement. The redevelopment followed a seven-year process and was supported by a fundraising campaign that had raised more than $300 million by the opening.
New York State reported a project cost of $160 million and combined state investment of $10.9 million. The new building gives the museum greater capacity to host exhibitions, deliver educational programmes and support artists while maintaining its longstanding presence in Harlem.
What Beyonce's gift means for the institution
The $2 million contribution was announced as a gift to the museum, without specifying a particular exhibition, artwork acquisition or programme to receive the entire amount.
The institution's wider activities include maintaining its permanent collection, organising exhibitions, supporting artists through residencies and providing educational opportunities. Its expanded facilities offer additional space for these initiatives.
Beyonce's statement established a direct connection between her support and the museum's work, particularly its role in introducing her to emerging artists.
Her contribution also draws attention to the importance of institutions that provide visibility and professional opportunities for artists whose work has historically been underrepresented.
A birthday gift with a cultural connection
Beyonce's $2 million gift combines her interest in art collecting with support for an institution that has championed artists of African descent for nearly six decades. The timing, following the museum's move into its new Harlem home, places the contribution within a significant period in its history. The donation supports an organisation whose work extends beyond exhibitions to artist development, education and the preservation of Black artistic expression.
It also highlights the role that cultural institutions can play in helping emerging artists reach new audiences and build sustainable careers.
