Ethereum Remote Procedure Call (RPC) endpoints connect wallets, decentralized applications, and exchanges to blockchain nodes. These interfaces retrieve balances, transaction histories, and smart contract information. However, outdated responses, synchronization delays, and infrastructure failures can disrupt applications even when Ethereum itself remains operational.
How Ethereum RPC Infrastructure Works
Ethereum RPC communicates with the execution clients with the help of JSON-RPC methods. Ethereum.org explains that developers rely on eth_blockNumber for getting the most recent block and eth_syncing for tracking synchronization processes.
Since Ethereum generates blocks every 12 seconds on average, nodes need to be continuously updated. Otherwise, delayed responses can lead to outdated balances, wrong transaction statuses, or inconsistent smart contracts. Typically, applications communicate with nodes through the immunity service providers, rather than operating their own servers.
Stale Data and Block Lag
Stale data is the term used when RPC endpoints return information from an earlier blockchain state. Block lag refers to how far a node is from the latest block in the network. For example, a node lagging five blocks indicates that it could deliver data nearly 60 seconds old, provided that 12 seconds is the time taken to mine blocks.
According to Geth documentation, full nodes usually retain the latest 128 block states, equivalent to approximately 25.6 minutes at 12-second intervals. Developers can monitor block heights across independent providers in order to flag synchronization issues before any interruption is noticed by end users.
Node Failures and RPC Outages
RPC failures can result from server overload, networking problems, synchronization issues, software defects, or infrastructure maintenance. On June 13, 2026, Infura reportedly experienced degraded Ethereum Mainnet JSON-RPC performance. According to Pingoru's incident record, the disruption lasted approximately five hours and eight minutes.
Meanwhile, January 2026 research examining Ethereum RPC reliability identified six previously undisclosed bugs across major client implementations, highlighting software vulnerabilities. Such incidents can interrupt transaction broadcasting, blockchain indexing, decentralized finance activity, and wallet functionality.
How RPC Failover Improves Reliability
RPC failover automatically redirects requests to alternative endpoints when the primary provider becomes unavailable or unreliable. Developers can configure multiple providers, monitor response times, and reject endpoints reporting outdated blocks.
Health checks should evaluate synchronization status, block height, network identity, and request latency rather than HTTP availability alone. Exponential backoff and circuit breakers can prevent repeated requests from overwhelming failing infrastructure. Using providers with independent infrastructure can also reduce shared failure risks.
Final Thoughts
Ethereum RPC reliability depends on data freshness, synchronization, and infrastructure resilience. Multiple providers, automated failover, and continuous monitoring help developers maintain dependable blockchain access during outages and network disruptions.

FAQs:
1. What is Ethereum RPC, and how does it work?
Ethereum Remote Procedure Call (RPC) enables wallets, decentralized applications, and exchanges to communicate with blockchain nodes. It allows applications to retrieve balances, access smart contract data, and broadcast transactions through standardized JSON-RPC methods.
2. What causes stale data in Ethereum RPC endpoints?
Stale data occurs when an Ethereum RPC endpoint returns outdated blockchain information due to synchronization delays, caching, or node performance issues. This can cause applications to display incorrect balances, outdated transaction statuses, or inconsistent smart contract information.
3. What is Ethereum block lag, and why does it matter?
Ethereum block lag measures how many blocks a node is behind the latest network block. Since Ethereum produces blocks approximately every 12 seconds, a five-block delay could result in information being roughly 60 seconds behind.
4. What causes Ethereum RPC node failures and outages?
Ethereum RPC failures can result from server overload, network connectivity problems, synchronization issues, software bugs, or infrastructure maintenance. These disruptions may prevent applications from retrieving blockchain data, broadcasting transactions, or accessing decentralized finance services.
5. How does Ethereum RPC failover improve blockchain reliability?
Ethereum RPC failover automatically redirects application requests to alternative endpoints when the primary provider becomes unavailable or unreliable. By combining multiple providers with block-height verification, latency monitoring, and health checks, developers can reduce service interruptions and improve application resilience.
