Palma Town Hall spokesperson Llorenç Bauzá stated on Wednesday that the Cathedral steps are not at risk of collapse. "There is a report confirming that the steps are in a perfectly adequate condition."
He was responding to accusations from the opposition PSOE, who had claimed earlier on Wednesday that the Partido Popular administration was putting people's lives at risk.
The town hall is currently carrying out work to address any issues with pipes. "A report from the urban planning department indicates that there is no danger of the structure collapsing. Work has been under way at the site for the last few days." Measures had previously been taken, including cordoning off part of the area.
Last week, a report from February of this year came to light, warning of the poor state of the steps following the discovery of cracks caused by a water leak from pipes. This leak had created a void of at least five cubic metres and the rooms beneath the steps had to be shored up to prevent a collapse.
Pepe Martínez of PSOE said on Wednesday: "We know the condition of the complex is extremely serious, as the technical report signed in February states that a partial demolition is required. We do not know if there are other voids. Eight months after the first cracks were detected, it is still unknown which areas are affected."
