Anne Carson wins Nobel Prize in Literature

Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson, 76, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm.

The Academy recognised her inventive writing and contemporary interpretations of classical literature. Born in Toronto, Carson has received numerous literary honours, combining ancient Greek and Latin traditions with original approaches to modern poetry and storytelling.

Carson studied classics at the University of Toronto, earning bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees before teaching at universities including Princeton, McGill, Stanford and New York University. Her works include Eros the Bittersweet and Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, which received a Governor General’s Award in 2020. She has also translated classical texts and adapted works for opera and performance.
