This week’s new movies on VOD include a couple of action-packed thrillers, a great family movie you can watch to get in the Halloweek spirit, and tons of great Hallmark movies which are now available to rent on demand. Mark Wahlberg’s historical thriller By Any Means is available to rent or buy on demand this week, as is the Ethan Hawke movie The Weight.
If you’re looking for something a tiny bit more family-friendly, Shaun The Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is the latest release from Aardman, the animation studio that gave us Wallace and Gromit. And if you’re looking for something a little more Christmasy (yikes, so soon?), some of the best Hallmark films from last year’s Countdown To Christmas roster, including Merry Christmas, Ted Cooper! and Holiday Touchdown: A Bills Love Story, are now available on digital platforms.
These are just a few of the films that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now.
By Any Means
The new Mark Wahlberg film By Any Means is loosely based on the true story of Gregory Scarpa (played by Wahlberg), a notorious mafia hitman turned FBI informant. Scarpa helped the FBI investigate the murders of civil rights leaders in Mississippi in 1966, working alongside Special FBI Agent Wayne Strider (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who is based on the real-life FBI agent Lindley DeVecchio.
The Weight
In The Weight, Ethan Hawke plays a Depression-era widower, Samuel Murphy, who is thrown into prison on a bogus charge and, desperate to reduce his sentence so that he might rescue his daughter Penny (Avy Berry) from impending foster placement, he strikes a terrible deal with the prison warden, Clancy (Russell Crowe). Murphy and a team he assembles must traverse a dangerous path carrying a load of gold bricks where he might face a fate even worse than his lengthy prison sentence.
