By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 21-year-old Belize City man accused of gunning down 17-year-old Kaylon Trevor David on Iguana Street Extension last Thursday was remanded to the Belize Central Prison following his arraignment on Tuesday.
Louis Maxwell Matthews, a resident of Iguana Street Extension, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 at approximately 1:24 p.m., where he was formally read a single charge of murder.
No plea was taken due to the nature of the offence, and Matthews was remanded to prison until his next court appearance on December 21, 2026.
Before leaving the courtroom, Matthews asked the magistrate whether he could be provided with a summary of the facts surrounding the murder allegation against him.
The charge stems from the fatal shooting of David on October 8, 2026. The teenager was walking along Iguana Street Extension around 6:30 p.m. when a gunman approached and fired several shots at him. David sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police previously indicated that the killing may have stemmed from an ongoing rivalry involving threats exchanged between David and other individuals in the area. Investigators also recovered a 9mm expended shell casing and reviewed surveillance footage from the vicinity.
As previously reported by Breaking Belize News, Matthews was formally arrested and charged on Saturday, October 10, just two days after the fatal shooting.
Police have also confirmed that David was not previously known to law enforcement.
Matthews remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
