The list contains 16 categories of prohibited items, including products that travelers might not expect to be restricted, such as pens designed to resemble syringes, decorative jelly beads and certain electric heating accessories.
The guide also identifies items subject to restrictions because of their chemical composition, radio capabilities, content or country of origin.
Foreign visitors planning to travel to Malaysia are advised to check the official customs guidance before packing to avoid carrying prohibited goods.
According to the published guide, the following items are prohibited from importation into Malaysia:
- Pens and pencils resembling syringes: Writing instruments and similar articles designed to look like syringes are prohibited.

- Indecent or obscene materials: These include printed publications, photographs, films, videotapes, laser discs, computer diskettes and similar media.
- Poisonous chemicals and minerals: Certain poisonous chemical and mineral substances are also covered by the restrictions.
- Certain waste paper and paperboard: Mixed waste and scrap paper or paperboard containing scheduled waste or mixed office waste are prohibited.
- Logs and rough timber from Indonesia: Malaysia specifically prohibits the importation from Indonesia of logs and rough timber, whether stripped of bark or partly squared.
- Items considered harmful to Malaysia’s interests: Any emblem or device that could reasonably be presumed intended for use in a manner prejudicial to Malaysia’s interests, or incompatible with the country’s peace, welfare or good order, falls under the prohibition.
Travelers Advised to Check Malaysia’s Customs Rules
The list demonstrates the range of goods covered by Malaysia’s import restrictions, from everyday-looking products to chemicals, electronic equipment and materials subject to specific controls.
While many of the restrictions apply to goods imported from all countries, the timber provision specifically identifies Indonesia as the country of origin concerned.
Foreign nationals planning a visit to Malaysia should consult the full guide on the Royal Customs Department’s official website before travelling.
Checking the rules in advance can help visitors avoid bringing prohibited items across the border.
