The presidential tour is an official engagement that is mandated by the Constitution of the Republic. It is meant to find out how the implementation of government policy impacts on the lives of the people in the country. It is also an opportunity for a government to explain its policies to the people.
Currently, the member for Banjul North at the National Assembly is claiming that he has received threats from the highest office in the land due to joining a candlelight demonstration against the blackouts that plagued Banjul some weeks ago. Both the government and the people should learn lessons from the incident.
The fact that Nawec did provide light to a dark city because of the protest indicates the objective of citizens conveying their grievances in a peaceful manner was attained. No government that is sensitive to the plight of the people would object to peaceful protests.
On the other hand, those who transform protests into violence that threaten lives and properties must also learn that that amounts to taking the law into their hands, which goes with legal implications. However, no president should issue any threat to a citizen. Every president should always tell the citizenry that if they are accused of any crime the law will take its course. Presidents should always act without fear or favour, affection or ill will.
