At The British School of Lisbon, academic ambition goes hand in hand with personalised learning, strong pastoral care and a belief that every student deserves the opportunity to discover their own path.

Choosing the right school for the I/GCSE and A Level years is an important decision for any family. These are the years when young people begin to make choices that will shape their future, discover where their interests and talents lie, and develop the independence and confidence they will need beyond the classroom.
At The British School of Lisbon (BSL), we believe that an excellent education should do more than prepare students for examinations. Academic achievement is, of course, fundamental, but equally important is the person each student becomes along the way.
Academic ambition, supported by exceptional teaching
We have high expectations of our students and make no apology for challenging them to achieve their very best. Our British curriculum encourages intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and a genuine understanding of subjects, rather than simply learning what is needed to pass an examination.
During the I/GCSE years, students benefit from a broad and rigorous academic programme, taught by specialist teachers who bring both expertise and enthusiasm to their subjects. Alongside the core curriculum, students are encouraged to explore their interests and make informed choices about the subjects they wish to pursue.

Looking ahead, we are excited to introduce our International A Level programme in September 2027, extending our educational pathway through to Year 13.
A Levels offer students the opportunity to study their chosen subjects in greater depth, developing the specialist knowledge, analytical skills and independence required for university study. Our Sixth Form will combine this academic focus with personalised mentoring, university guidance and opportunities for enrichment beyond the traditional curriculum.

Choice matters, but so does guidance
We recognise that no two students are alike. Some discover their academic passions early, while others need time, encouragement and the opportunity to explore different possibilities.
At BSL, choice is not simply about offering subjects. It is about helping young people understand their strengths, develop their interests and make thoughtful decisions about their future.
Through close relationships with teachers and individual guidance, we aim to ensure that every student follows a pathway that is both ambitious and appropriate for them.
A school where students are known and supported
The teenage years bring significant academic, social and personal changes. We believe that students achieve their best when they feel secure, understood and confident enough to challenge themselves.
Our pastoral approach is therefore not something separate from academic learning; it is central to it.
We place great importance on the relationships between students and teachers, creating an environment where young people feel comfortable asking questions, seeking support and learning from their mistakes.

Our school pillars of Character, Community and Choice are reflected in everyday school life in addition to our values. We encourage students to work hard, show integrity, treat others with respect and understand the value of contributing positively to the community around them.
We want our students to achieve excellent qualifications, but we also want them to leave us as thoughtful, resilient and compassionate young adults.
Preparing for university, and for life
The transition from school to university is about much more than meeting entry requirements. Young people need to be able to think independently, manage challenges, communicate confidently and take responsibility for their own learning.
These are qualities we seek to develop throughout a student's time at BSL, both inside and outside the classroom.

As our Secondary School continues to grow at our Restelo campus, our ambition remains clear: to provide an education that combines academic excellence with genuine individual attention, while preserving the close-knit, welcoming community that is such an important part of our school.
Ultimately, the question we encourage families to consider is not only "What qualifications will my child achieve?" but also "What kind of person will my child become?"
At BSL, we believe both questions matter equally.
