SHILLONG, Oct 24: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has demanded a dedicated quota for Meghalaya students in the BSc Nursing course at NEIGRIHMS, after observing that none of the 48 candidates on the 2026-27 provisional admission list appear to be from the state.
In a statement on Friday, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said the Council has submitted a representation to the Director of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) seeking a fair opportunity for local students to access the central institution.
The provisional admission list was notified on September 7.
While acknowledging the national character of NEIGRIHMS and the principle of merit, Synrem argued that students from Meghalaya must have meaningful access to professional education at an institute located in their own state.
The HYC has proposed a seat-allocation system similar to the model followed by the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, or the existing reservation framework for Meghalaya students in MBBS admissions at NEIGRIHMS.
The Council urged the institute to place the proposal before its Governing Council during the upcoming meeting on October 27 to consider necessary amendments to admission rules.
Synrem stated that such a mechanism would improve access for local students and help strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce.
