Kisoro District vaccinated 71,133 children against measles and rubella, achieving 99.72% of its target after extending the October campaign to reach communities in the district’s hilly and hard-to-access areas.
Kisoro District has vaccinated 71,133 children aged between nine months and five years against measles and rubella, achieving 99.72% of its target population during a campaign that was extended to reach hard-to-access communities.
District Health Officer Dr Bosco Muhangi said the exercise was initially scheduled to run from October 1 to 5, 2026, but was extended to October 8 to give health workers more time to reach eligible children.
Muhangi attributed the extension to Kisoro’s hilly terrain, which made it difficult for vaccination teams to access some communities within the initial five-day period.
“The additional days enabled health workers to reach more children, particularly those living in hard-to-reach areas, and ensure that as many eligible children as possible received the vaccines,” Muhangi said.
He commended health workers, security personnel, Village Health Teams (VHTs), Community Health Extension Workers and local leaders for their contribution to the campaign.
“Our coordinated efforts helped vaccination teams reach children in remote communities, ensuring that vaccines were safely transported, properly handled and administered,” Muhangi said.
The campaign targeted children aged nine months to five years, a group prioritised for measles and rubella vaccination to protect them against the two vaccine-preventable diseases.
