The satellite internet war: Musk vs Indian regulators | Apple smart home & Xiaomi Air Purifier 6 review | Tech Today
A high-stakes clash between global tech giants and national regulators has taken center stage over the future of satellite broadband in India. In this episode of Tech Today, Cyrus breaks down the regulatory standoff surrounding Starlink, takes a first look at Apple’s newly unveiled smart home hardware, and tests Xiaomi’s Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 ahead of North India's winter pollution spike. The satellite internet debate escalated into a public spat after Elon Musk alleged that local business interests are obstructing Starlink’s rollout, prompting Indian authorities and Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to firmly state that national security, data sovereignty, and regulatory frameworks apply equally to all operators. With India's satcom market projected to hit $14.8 billion by 2033, the struggle goes far beyond connecting remote regions; it is a battle over critical digital infrastructure, spectrum allocation, and stringent security mandates. We break down the government’s non-negotiable GMPCS requirements, including local gateway landing stations, strict real-time lawful interception, geographic beam kill-switches, and zero foreign data routing, alongside the economic challenge of high upfront dish costs versus low-cost Indian terrestrial 5G. In Tech & You, we look at Apple’s surprise smart home hardware announcements. Headlining the lineup is the Apple HomeView, a 7-inch wall- or table-mountable smart display priced at ₹39,900 that features Siri AI and recognizes up to six household members. Apple also introduced a refreshed Apple TV 4K at ₹39,900 with far-field voice microphones and Find My remote precision finding, the HomePod mini 2 at ₹18,900, and a broader connected home collection built with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. We evaluate whether Apple's premium pricing can successfully challenge established ecosystems like Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Finally, as seasonal AQI levels begin to rise across Delhi-NCR and the northern plains, we test the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6, retailing at ₹19,999. Featuring five-stage filtration with primary, HEPA, activated carbon, UVC, and negative ion systems, the purifier is rated for up to 940 square feet with a 443 m³/h particle CADR. In our real-world candle smoke stress test, the unit reduced an extreme 600 AQI down to 54 within 35 minutes and reached 12 in about an hour. We review its compact build, quiet 32dB sleep mode, app controls, and how it compares to alternatives like the Honeywell Air Touch P2. Should national security guardrails take priority over rapid satellite internet rollouts, or is the process moving too slowly?
