Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) deputy party leader Cleophas Malala has laid out a bold electoral strategy for Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna's presidential ambitions, insisting that a coalition with former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua is the only realistic path to State House in 2027.

Speaking on Saturday, October 24, Malala argued that Sifuna must invest significant time in the Mt. Kenya region to build grassroots support there, warning that ignoring the vote-rich bloc would be a fatal miscalculation for any presidential hopeful.
"If you want our brother Edwin Sifuna to become the president of the Republic of Kenya, then he must go and spend time in the Mt. Kenya region and work closely with the people there so that we can get the numbers needed to enter State House," Malala said.
The former Kakamega senator went further, revealing that he took up a deputy leadership position within Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party specifically to lobby the former deputy president into backing Sifuna's bid, describing his role as one of persuasion and bridge-building.
"I said I will be DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua's deputy. My job there is to persuade him to support our son, to hold his hand, so that he can add those eight million votes to Sifuna's tally and enable him to become the president of the Republic of Kenya," he said.
Malala also used the post to defend his alignment with DCP Party widely associated with the Kikuyu community, pushing back against critics who have questioned his political judgement.
He drew a cautionary parallel with Ford Kenya founder and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, arguing that building a political vehicle around a single ethnic constituency is a recipe for stagnation.
"We cannot all keep repeating the same mistakes that Wetang'ula made. He formed Ford Kenya, and all its leaders came from Bukusu. That is why Wetang'ula has never progressed in his political career," Malala said, adding with characteristic confidence: "I am a sharp boy."
Malala has been a consistent advocate for opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Election, repeatedly insisting that Sifuna, who leads the nationally recognised Linda Mwananchi Movement, must be on the presidential ballot.
His latest remarks signal that he views Gachagua's estrangement from President William Ruto's administration as an opportunity to assemble the cross-regional coalition he believes is necessary to unseat the incumbent.
