AS Nigeria approaches the end-of-year travel season, domestic airlines are once again confronted with the familiar challenge of balancing rising passenger demand against limited operational capacity, escalating costs, infrastructure constraints, amongst others.
This year, however, the temporary closure of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, introduces another complication that could intensify pressure on airlines, passengers and airports already preparing for one of the busiest periods on the domestic aviation calendar.
The end-of-year season is traditionally a critical period for Nigerian aviation. Thousands of passengers travel to reunite with their families, attend weddings, participate in cultural festivals, conduct business and celebrate Christmas and the New Year. Demand for domestic air transport typically increases on major routes connecting Lagos and Abuja with destinations across the South-East, South-South, and other parts of the country.
For airlines, this surge represents an important commercial opportunity. Higher passenger volumes can improve revenue and aircraft utilisation, particularly on routes where demand is strong.
Yet the opportunity comes with significant operational risks. When aircraft, crews, airport facilities and maintenance resources are already stretched, even a relatively minor disruption can trigger a chain of delays, cancellations, diversions and additional costs.
The closure of Owerri airport, therefore, comes at a particularly sensitive time, raising questions about the resilience of Nigeria’s domestic aviation network and the ability of airlines to accommodate seasonal demand without compromising safety, service quality or financial sustainability.
The temporary closure of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport has implications beyond the immediate inconvenience to passengers travelling to and from Owerri.

In the first instance, it removes a destination from normal airport operations for the duration of the closure and redirects affected passengers towards alternative airports, notably Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and, depending on the airline’s operational arrangements and passengers’ final destinations, Port Harcourt International Airport.
Although these airports provide alternatives, they cannot be regarded as interchangeable substitutes without considering geographical access, passenger convenience, airline schedules, available infrastructure and ground transportation.
For passengers travelling to Imo State and surrounding communities, landing in Enugu or Port Harcourt may mean additional road journeys, higher transportation costs and longer door-to-door travel times. The disruption is particularly consequential for elderly travellers, families with children, business passengers and those travelling on tight schedules.
The consequences for airlines are equally significant. Diverting flights or transferring passengers to alternative airports requires careful coordination of flight schedules, aircraft rotations, crew duty periods, passenger handling and ground services. Where flights are rescheduled or rerouted, airlines may also incur additional fuel, navigation, handling and passenger-accommodation costs.
However, it is important to distinguish between a diversion and a planned schedule adjustment. Depending on the closure notice and the airline’s response, a carrier may suspend Owerri services temporarily, relocate its operations to another airport or make other arrangements. Not every affected flight will necessarily be diverted after departure.
The broader issue is that airport closures redistribute demand rather than eliminate it. Passengers who would ordinarily use Owerri may seek alternative air connections, increasing pressure on airports and routes that are already expected to experience heavy traffic during the festive period.
