Apple’s new Siri AI features won’t be exclusive to its latest Apple TV 4K after all. The company has confirmed that older streaming boxes will also receive the upgraded assistant, including models dating back to 2021.
The update will arrive with tvOS 27.2 later this autumn, bringing Siri AI in beta to the second– and third-generation Apple TV 4K. That means existing owners won’t necessarily need to spend £/$300 on Apple’s newly announced streaming box to try out some of its biggest software upgrades.
One of the main additions is conversational entertainment search, allowing users to ask Siri more natural questions when looking for something to watch. The assistant will also support follow-up questions, making it easier to narrow down recommendations without starting a new search each time.
Siri AI can also use personal context through a paired compatible device, although there’s a catch. The Home app’s designated home owner must have an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad running the latest software, with Siri AI enabled and configured in a supported language.
At launch, the feature will support English in eight countries, including the UK, US, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa.
There are still some limitations worth noting. Apple’s latest Apple TV 4K includes built-in far-field microphones for hands-free voice commands, something older models lack. While their remotes have microphones, it’s unclear whether they’ll support the full range of new Siri AI capabilities.
It’s also not yet confirmed whether older models will receive all the upgraded smart home controls included in tvOS 27.2.
The software update forms part of Apple’s wider smart home push, which also includes a new HomeView hub, an updated HomePod mini and other connected home devices.
Apple hasn’t confirmed an exact release date for tvOS 27.2, although the new Apple TV 4K is scheduled to arrive on 13 November.
For existing Apple TV 4K owners, the update could be a welcome way to get some of Apple’s latest AI features without replacing perfectly good hardware.
