Renowned Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés, celebrated as one of the most decorated figures in international jazz, is commemorating his 85th birthday on one of the world's most iconic stages: the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. He is set to perform two concerts—this Friday and Saturday—alongside a quintet of American jazz luminaries.
"An extraordinary and truly masterful artist, the virtuoso Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés returns to the Rose Theater to honor his 85th birthday, presenting classic pieces infused with a Latin flair," Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) announced on its website. This esteemed nonprofit organization is dedicated to the performance, education, and promotion of this artistic genre.
Valdés will delve into a captivating exploration of his deep connections with American jazz. Accompanied by a stellar quintet featuring the legendary saxophonist Joe Lovano, innovative bassist John Patitucci, world-renowned trumpeter Terence Blanchard, and the prodigious drummer Marcus Gilmore, Valdés will deliver a passionate, scholarly, and expressive performance in an unforgettable birthday celebration.
Born in Quivicán on October 9, 1941, Valdés will take the audience on a journey through a career marked by the vibrant interplay between jazz and Afro-Cuban roots, as he shared in a phone interview with EFE. The performances are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Engaging Pre-Show Activities
Prior to each performance, an introductory talk will be offered to the audience at 6:30 p.m., and attendees can use their tickets to enjoy the Late Night Session at Dizzy's Club at 10:45 p.m.
The 85th birthday celebration kicked off on October 3 at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, with the same guest musicians, and will continue on October 20 in Charleston and October 23 at Cornell University.
Upcoming Tour and New Album Release
In 2027, the tour will expand to San Francisco for four nights in late May and to Paris on April 28, where Valdés will perform with his Royal Quartet.
Alongside the tour, Valdés released his album "UNCUT" in September, marking his first solo piano album in about 20 years, produced by InnerJazz/InnerCat Music Group. The album features eight pieces recorded in a single continuous take, void of studio edits or retakes, and Valdés himself described it as possibly his best solo piano album.
A Legacy of Excellence
Valdés’ 85 years are backed by one of the most illustrious careers in world jazz: seven Grammy Awards, multiple Latin Grammys, induction into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in the same year, and in 2025, the title of NEA Jazz Master, the highest honor the United States bestows upon a jazz musician.
His musical journey began from birth: as the son of legendary pianist and bandleader Bebo Valdés, Chucho graduated from the Havana Municipal Conservatory of Music at 14 and made his professional debut in 1959.
In 1973, he founded Irakere with Paquito D'Rivera and other Cuban musicians, a group that fused jazz, Afro-Cuban music, rock, and elements of Yoruba ritual music, winning a Grammy for Best Latin Recording in 1979.
Valdés currently resides in Broward County, Florida, and publicly declared his exile in November 2024.
