A Class IX student in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district died by suicide at her home, with her family alleging that persistent harassment by three young men had left her distressed.
The 16-year-old student, a resident of a village under the Chirgaon police station area, was found hanging from a ventilation window on Sunday. Police have sent her body for a post-mortem and are investigating the allegations made by her family.
According to her uncle, Indal Singh Yadav, the student had been harassed by two to three young men. One of them allegedly threatened to force her into marriage and elope with her.
The student reportedly told her cousin about the harassment. When he confronted the young men, they allegedly assaulted him and threatened to kill him before fleeing, Yadav claimed.
The incident left the student frightened, her uncle alleged, adding that he believed the harassment had driven her to take her own life.
On Sunday, the student's parents had gone to a temple to attend a Kanya Bhoj, a religious ritual in which young girls are served a meal. The student was at home with her sister, who later went outside to play.
When the sister returned about an hour later, she found the door locked. With the help of neighbours, she managed to open it and found the student hanging from a ventilation window.
The family informed the police, who reached the spot and took custody of the body for a post-mortem examination.
Jhansi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vikas Kumar said the police had received information about the death of a girl in the Chirgaon police station area.
He said the family had reported an argument with some young men two to three days before the incident and alleged that it had caused the student distress.
The police are investigating the family's allegations, and further action will be taken based on the findings, the SSP said.
