Amazon is making it easier for readers to mark up ebooks by bringing handwritten note-taking features to its Kindle app for Android. The update allows users with compatible stylus-enabled devices to write directly on ebook pages, giving readers another option if they prefer handwriting over typing.
The feature was spotted by Kindle users. However, it remains limited, and iPhone and iPad users do not yet have access to the same functionality in the Kindle app.
Readers Can Write Directly on Ebook Pages
This new feature introduces a more traditional way of reading e-books. Instead of toggling between an e-book and a notes app on their device, users can use a stylus to highlight and annotate the book as they read.
This may help students highlight key concepts, researchers review their notes, and users jot down comments on specific paragraphs. The feature builds on Amazon's existing efforts to expand digital annotation tools across its Kindle ecosystem.
Stylus Support Is a Key Requirement
The handwritten annotation appears to be limited to Android phones and tablets that support a stylus. Users with compatible devices may access the feature through the Kindle app, though availability may depend on the device and app version.
Amazon has not extended the same functionality to the iPadOS version of Kindle, according to reports. Readers should check their app for the feature rather than assume it is available on every Android device.

A Useful Addition for Students and Researchers
The new feature may improve the appeal of the Kindle application for people who use e-books for educational purposes and research. Handwritten notes let users engage with texts without leaving the app, especially when working on long documents.
Amazon has gradually expanded Kindle's note-taking capabilities through its dedicated reading devices and software updates. Bringing handwriting tools to compatible Android devices extends some of that convenience beyond dedicated Kindle hardware. Wider availability would make the feature more useful to people who switch between phones, tablets, and computers while reading.
