Deion Sanders has given fans a disturbing glimpse into one of the darkest chapters of his life, sharing graphic photographs of his amputated toes to mark five years since the medical ordeal.
The Colorado football coach posted images of his left foot on Instagram, prompting strong reactions from his children, including son Shedeur Sanders.
Nikola Jokic and Nuggets teammates head to Boulder for the Deion Sanders experience.
The photographs show surgical stitches, darkened skin and a pin protruding from one of his toes. Shedeur responded bluntly in the comments, writing, “Need a warning sign.”
“You should of kept them in a jar,” wrote Shilo, while Shelomi added: “JUMP SCARE”. Despite the shocking nature of the photographs, Sanders explained that he wasn't looking for sympathy.
Instead, he wanted to share his experience as a testament to his faith, promising to reveal more pictures to demonstrate “how good God is.”
Deion Sanders’ terrifying health battle and remarkable recovery
Sanders' medical crisis began in 2021 after he underwent a procedure for a dislocated toe and an inflamed nerve. Complications involving dangerous blood clots and impaired circulation left him fighting for his health.
He spent 23 days in hospital and underwent eight surgeries in three weeks, with doctors even discussing the possibility of amputating his leg below the knee.
Ultimately, surgeons removed his big toe and second toe on his left foot. Despite the ordeal, Sanders returned to the Jackson State sideline in November 2021 in a motorized wheelchair.
His team secured a 21–17 victory, with Shedeur delivering the decisive touchdown and Shilo Sanders recording an interception.
Sanders later opened up about the frightening experience in his documentary series, “Coach Prime,” explaining how the medical team had shifted from discussing toe amputations to considering a more extensive procedure to save his life.
His health struggles didn't end there. In 2023, he underwent another procedure to remove blood clots from his right leg. Two years later, he revealed that doctors had discovered a high-grade cancerous bladder tumor.
Sanders subsequently underwent bladder removal surgery and later announced that he was cancer-free.
His family has occasionally turned to humor to navigate these difficult experiences.
Shedeur once told his father he was “ten toes down” for him, prompting Sanders to joke, “No, I’m eight.” Shilo has also admitted that he struggled to look directly at his father's injured foot.
More recently, Sanders received custom silicone prosthetic toes designed to improve balance, stability and walking comfort. He celebrated the development by declaring himself “ten toes down again.”
His partner, Karrueche Tran, has found humor in the situation, affectionately nicknaming his altered foot “Little Foot.” She has also praised his determination not to let his medical challenges dictate his life.
Although the photographs might unsettle viewers, Sanders sees them as proof of his survival.
