South Sudan’s Political Parties Council (PPC) has set Thursday, October 22, as the deadline for political parties seeking to register pre-election coalitions ahead of the country’s planned December 2026 elections.
The council announced on Wednesday that it had registered four pre-election coalitions comprising 25 political parties, saying they had met the required legal and regulatory criteria.
Addressing the media in Juba, PPC Chairperson James Akol Zakayo said the four coalitions had been entered into the council’s official register following an extraordinary session.
“Following an extraordinary session convened today under the leadership of the chairperson, James Akol Zakayo, the council confirms that four pre-election coalitions listed below have met all regulatory compliance standards and statutory criteria. They are formally entered into the master directory of registered pre-election coalitions,” he said.
The four registered coalitions are the National Agenda Coalition of Political Parties (NAC), the Coalition of National Alliance of Political Parties (CNA), the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) and the National Alliance of Political Parties (NAPP).
According to Zakayo, the National Agenda Coalition comprises 10 political parties, the Coalition of National Alliance of Political Parties has six, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance has five, and the National Alliance of Political Parties has four.
It remains unclear how the council addressed rival factions within political coalitions that have split, or whether the registration process accounted for competing claims to represent those alliances.
The council urged the leadership of the 25 constituent parties to complete any outstanding internal documentation, obtain the necessary signatures and make the required legal deposits at the Registry Department before the deadline.
“The Political Parties Council strongly urges the leadership of all twenty-five registered political constituent parties to finalize any outstanding internal documentation, secure necessary signatures, and complete their legal deposits at the Registry Department before the absolute expiration of the deadline of this coalition,” Zakayo said.
He said registration certificates would be issued to the respective parties and coalition leaders by Monday, October 26.
“Tomorrow is the closing day,” he said on Wednesday.
Zakayo said the deadline was based on a legal requirement that political parties register their coalitions at least 60 days before the election.
“We all know the Act says that any party that wants to register a coalition must submit before 22nd of October, 60 days prior to the election. So tomorrow is the last day for submission of registration of coalition. Whoever will submit next tomorrow will not be detained,” he said.
South Sudan is scheduled to hold general elections on December 22, 2026. The coalition registration deadline comes as political parties prepare for the planned vote.
