The multi-purpose complex and library remaining closed in Ilayagudi in Sivaganga district.
Over two years after its construction was completed, a state-of-the-art multi-purpose complex and library near the Ilayangudi old bus stand remains locked and inaccessible to the public, severely hampering students and job seekers preparing for competitive examinations.
Initiated under the town panchayat’s own funding scheme for the 2023–2024 fiscal year at an estimated cost of ₹1.15 crore, the project was envisioned as a major educational hub for the region.
The facility was designed with modern amenities tailored for exam aspirants, including dedicated computer labs, specialised library setups, a separate drinking water station, and accessibility features for differently abled individuals.
Beyond serving as a study centre, the building was intended to host educational classes, support local self-help groups, and facilitate student skill-development programs.
However, local residents and student groups pointed out that bureaucratic delays have left the building shuttered long after construction works were completed.
Serving as a central hub for roughly 55 surrounding village panchayats, Ilayangudi witnesses hundreds of youth looking for affordable study spaces. With the local library remaining closed, many are forced to travel to distant towns and cities just to find a suitable environment for exam preparation.
When contacted regarding the prolonged delay, an official of the town panchayat, said, “The remaining works will be completed within the next two months. The building will subsequently be opened to the public equipped with all necessary infrastructure.”
For now, local students and civic activists continue to urge the town panchayat administration to expedite the final steps and open the doors of a facility that was promised to be a steppingstone for the district’s youth.
