Ugandan senior commercial and marketing executive Milton George Mukula has been appointed Commercial & Product Development Lead at MMD Steel Group, an African steel manufacturing group with operations across multiple markets on the continent.
The appointment marks a significant milestone in his career, taking him from commercial leadership in East Africa to a broader Pan-African role focused on business growth, product development and market expansion.
Mukula will be based in Ghana, where he will work with and support commercial teams across Ghana, Burkina Faso, Benin, Angola, Mali, Niger, Togo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Burundi.
His responsibilities will span commercial performance, product development, market development, exports, route-to-market strategies and geographical expansion, supporting MMD Steel Group’s ambition to strengthen its commercial presence across Africa.
The role brings together several areas in which Mukula has built extensive experience over more than 18 years in sales, marketing and commercial leadership, positioning him at the intersection of industrial products, commercial strategy and African market development.
Mukula’s appointment follows a career spanning several major commercial sectors, including fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), telecommunications and steel and building solutions.
His professional journey includes Bidco Oils Uganda Limited, Uganda Breweries Limited, part of Diageo, Airtel Uganda Limited and, most recently, Uganda Baati Limited.
His four years at Uganda Baati, a member of the Safal Group, gave him specialised experience in the steel and building solutions industry, providing valuable insight into the commercial dynamics of industrial products and construction markets.
This experience means Mukula is not entering the steel sector for the first time. Rather, he is building on practical experience gained within a major East and Southern African steel group and applying it to a wider Pan-African commercial mandate.
His cross-sector background has exposed him to different customer segments, distribution models, market conditions and commercial strategies. These experiences are expected to be relevant to his new responsibilities at MMD Steel Group, particularly in strengthening market access, identifying growth opportunities and aligning product offerings with customer needs.
Another distinctive strength Mukula brings to the role is his longstanding connection with the French language.
Before entering sales and marketing, he studied French for six years and taught the language for two years. This background could prove valuable in his new assignment, which covers several Francophone African markets alongside English-speaking countries.
His portfolio includes Burkina Faso, Mali, Benin, Togo, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an understanding of French can support communication and relationship-building with customers, distributors and business partners.
Operating across these markets requires more than commercial expertise. It also calls for an appreciation of language, culture, customer behaviour, business practices and local market dynamics.
Mukula’s French-language background therefore adds a useful dimension to his ability to engage with stakeholders across Africa’s diverse commercial landscape.
At MMD Steel Group, Mukula’s role extends beyond traditional sales and marketing. As Commercial & Product Development Lead, he will be positioned to connect market intelligence and customer requirements with product development and commercial execution.
The responsibility involves understanding what customers need, identifying opportunities in different markets and helping align the company’s products and commercial strategies with those opportunities.
In the steel and construction sectors, effective product development and market expansion depend on understanding customer preferences, distribution channels, pricing dynamics and the requirements of different construction and industrial applications.
By bringing together his experience in sales, marketing, telecommunications and steel, Mukula enters the role with a broad commercial perspective that can support the group’s efforts to develop markets and strengthen its competitive position.
Mukula’s industry experience is complemented by an extensive academic and professional marketing background.
His qualifications include a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing, a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Marketing and a Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Transformation in Global Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM-UK).
He also holds a Diploma in Business Studies from Makerere University and a Certificate in Project Planning from ICDL Africa.
In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Mukula serves as a professional tutor with the Chartered Institute of Marketing, combining practical industry experience with professional marketing education.
This blend of academic training, professional development and hands-on commercial leadership provides a foundation for working across both strategic planning and day-to-day business execution.
Africa’s urbanisation, infrastructure development, housing demand and industrialisation continue to create opportunities for businesses operating in the steel and construction sectors.
However, capturing these opportunities requires more than the availability of products. Companies must understand local markets, develop relevant product offerings, establish effective routes to market, strengthen distribution networks and build sustainable commercial models.
These are areas closely aligned with Mukula’s experience across FMCG, telecommunications and steel.
His new assignment provides an opportunity to apply lessons from these industries to a diverse portfolio of African markets, each with its own customer needs, competitive landscape and commercial requirements.
The role also reflects the importance of connecting commercial strategy with product development, ensuring that business growth is supported by a clear understanding of market demand and the needs of customers.
Mukula’s relocation to Ghana represents more than a geographical move. It marks a transition from market-level commercial leadership to a broader Pan-African role encompassing commercial performance, product development and market expansion.
From Bidco Oils Uganda and Uganda Breweries/Diageo to Airtel Uganda and Uganda Baati under the Safal Group, each stage of his career has contributed to a diverse commercial skill set.
Now based in Ghana, Mukula takes on the responsibility of supporting commercial teams, developing market opportunities and contributing to growth across multiple African countries.
His appointment brings together more than 18 years of commercial experience, specialised exposure to the steel industry, formal marketing qualifications and French-language proficiency in a role designed to support MMD Steel Group’s broader African ambitions.
As the group continues to pursue opportunities across the continent, his new position places him at the intersection of commercial leadership, product development and cross-border market expansion.
