Some Yorkshire pubs have been pulling pints for centuries, but at these haunted hotspots, supernatural happenings are stealing the show.
Feeling brave? These are the most haunted pubs in Yorkshire.
Whether you’re ordering a Timothy Taylor’s or Thwaites, swapping stories over pints just got scarier.
Ye Olde White Harte, Hull
For a haunted pub in Yorkshire, Ye Olde White Harte is the place to start.
Supernatural tales are hardly a surprise given that this 16th-century Hull pub has a human skull on display.
Landlords have previously reported moving objects, ghostly figures, and strange noises.
The Fleece Inn, Elland
There are said to be 15 ghosts lurking in the hallways of The Fleece Inn, including a headless horseman, “Old Leathery Coit.”
The TV series Most Haunted investigated the inn in 2017.
Since nicknamed one of the “most haunted pubs in Britain,” a late-night drink at The Fleece is not for the faint-hearted.
Golden Fleece, York
Claimed to be the oldest pub in York, written records show the Golden Fleece was operating back in 1503.
According to local legend, 15 ghosts roam its corridors.
Watch for the pistol-wielding “One-Eyed Jack” and Alice Peckett, a former landlady apparently refusing to retire.
Old Queen’s Head, Sheffield
Opened in 1475, the Old Queen’s Head has some stories to tell.
The historic pub was already serving customers when Mary Queen of Scots arrived as a prisoner at the nearby Sheffield Manor Lodge.
While Mary has yet to make a ghostly entrance, there are reports of an old soldier appearing by the fireplace.
Hales Bar, Harrogate
Drinking in this gas-lit saloon bar is already spooky. Ask staff about its hauntings, though, and the atmosphere gets even spookier.
Hales Bar is full of paranormal tales, from manic laughter to glasses flying off shelves.
Black Bull, Otley
As the oldest pub in Otley, the Black Bull was famously “drunk dry” by Oliver Cromwell’s troops before the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644.
Today, it holds stories of unexplained footsteps and faces stroked by invisible fingertips.
Ye Olde Starre Inne, York
Ye Old Starr Inne is amongst the creepiest pubs in York. Staff have reported hearing ghostly wails of injured Royalists, who sheltered in the inn’s cellars during the English Civil War in 1644.
At least there are some friendly ghosts, too; customers have reported seeing spectral black cats.
