Logan Gilbert trade idea floated after Mariners’ disappointing season appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Seattle Mariners entered the 2026 season with lofty expectations. After reaching the American League Championship Series in 2025, it seemed as if Seattle could take the next step and become a World Series ball club this year. Instead, the Mariners fell short of expectations and missed the postseason altogether. Now, they are looking to find a way to bounce back in 2027.
The Mariners moved on from Dan Wilson immediately after the regular season came to an end. While a coaching change could help, Seattle clearly needs to make roster moves as well. Jason A. Churchill recently explained why the ball club should consider making a Logan Gilbert trade, via baseballthings.com.
“If the club isn’t going to be able to extend Logan Gilbert, trading him this winter may very well be the clear top option over carrying him and either trading him in July or letting him walk after the season and getting the draft pick compensation,” Churchill explained. “… If Logan Gilbert is getting market value — which he will — does that make sense for the Seattle Mariners moving forward considering the cost, the organizational strengths, the payroll squeeze it will create… and the other needs the club has that trading Gilbert could help solve?”

The Mariners’ pitching is a strength. Gilbert, 29, will become a free agent following the 2027 season. Trading him does indeed make sense. It would allow Seattle to upgrade the offense without entering a complete rebuild.
Rather, the Mariners’ possible trade of Gilbert would work more as a retooling move to get back on track in 2027. It remains to be seen if Gilbert will be made available, however.
