With Davante Adams out until at least late November, should deep-league fantasy managers rush to add Konata Mumpfield? Well, that depends.
The Rams entered this season as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. Now they're 2-4 in a division that includes the undefeated 49ers and the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks. The Rams will face the 49ers, Seahawks (twice), Chiefs, and Packers in five of their final six games.
In other words, losing Adams isn't just losing their second-best receiver. It also puts this win-now franchise in a predicament: roll with the roster they have, or trade for help. They have enough cap space for a wideout on a rookie contract (like Brian Thomas Jr. or Quentin Johnston).
Or they could get a little creative financially (if their trade partner is willing and able) to land a higher-priced receiver. For example, the Browns would probably need to absorb a lot of salary if they trade Jerry Jeudy, no matter where he goes. The Rams would be no exception, and it could be a win-win if Cleveland gets an ascending player and/or draft picks in return.
Sticking with Mumpfield makes sense if the team believes he's ready to take on a true #2 role, an impact receiver who can elevate this passing attack beyond a Puka-Nacua-or-bust operation. But Mumpfield is a former seventh-round pick who's reeled in only 18 of his 40 career targets and dropped four.
In other words, like Jordan Whittington and even Tutu Atwell, Mumpfield hasn't shown he's an above-replacement-level receiver. That might prompt the Rams to find an immediate replacement.
