Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann still has hopes that he can return to the Germany national team and refuses to retire.
"It's about age and change. However, he (coach Jürgen Klopp) hasn't closed the door. That's why I won't retire," Baumann told broadcaster RTL ahead of Thursday's Europa League match against Besiktas.
He was referring to a conversation he had with Klopp, who took charge of the team after the disappointing World Cup in June/July.
"I'm trying to perform well here, as always, and play at a level where I'm eligible for the national team," he said.
"I feel fit enough to help a national team. Then, of course, I'll leave the decision to the coach."
Baumann was the starter in World Cup qualifying but former Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann decided to tempt Manuel Neuer out of international retirement for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The goalkeeper said that he's on good terms with Nagelsmann.
"I have absolutely no problem with Julian. We get along very well. We even spoke after the World Cup," he said.
"Everything was really fine. Of course, the decision hurt me and made me angry. And I didn't understand it either. He knows all that. And we communicated clearly about it."
Germany crashed out in the last 32 in June and Nagelsmann resigned. His replacement Klopp named his first squad of 44 players for the recent Nations League matches but Baumann, 36, was left out entirely.
