Death sentences in the Saurabh Rajput and Amit Kashyap murder cases have drawn attention to other women lodged in Meerut's Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail, including several who are facing trial for allegedly murdering their husbands, Press Trust of India reported.
Muskan and Sahil Shukla were sentenced to death in the Saurabh Rajput 'blue drum' murder case, while Ravita and Amardeep received the death penalty in the Amit Kashyap murder case. Their families are preparing to challenge the verdicts in the high court. The guilt and punishment of the other inmates will be decided by courts on the basis of evidence and proceedings in their respective cases.
Anjali, a resident of Agwanpur village in the Parikshitgarh area, has been in jail since November 2025 in connection with the murder of her husband, Rahul. She is accused of conspiring with their neighbour, Ajay, to kill him.
According to the allegations, Rahul had objected to their purported relationship. He was then called to a temple outside the village and shot dead. The trial is under way.
Anjali, a mother of three, undertakes cleaning and stitching work in jail. She also participates in religious activities and spends her free time listening to the Ramayana and learning to read. Her family visits her occasionally.
Komal is accused of conspiring to murder her husband, Nain Singh, a Border Security Force constable. Police allege that she planned the murder with Gulshan, her sister's fiance.
She is accused of pawning her jewellery to arrange Rs 6 lakh to hire contract killers to murder her husband. The incident is believed to have taken place on April 4. Police arrested five people, including Komal and Gulshan, and sent them to jail.
Komal takes part in cooking, stitching and knitting activities in jail. She has reportedly expressed remorse during counselling sessions. She often sits quietly after completing her work, while her family members visit her occasionally.
Ilma, the wife of Talib, has been arrested in connection with his death in Zakir Colony, under the Lohianagar police station area. Police allege that she conspired with her purported lover, Aman, and another associate to murder Talib. He was allegedly strangled with a dupatta on the night of September 28.
A post-mortem report received on Friday cited asphyxiation as the cause of death, following which police arrested Ilma and sent her to jail. According to police, Ilma had called Talib's family after the incident and told them that he had died of a heart attack.
The family took the body to his native village, Rasoolpur Bhaderhi, in the Budhana area of Muzaffarnagar district, where it was buried without a post-mortem examination. The body was later exhumed on the district magistrate's orders and an autopsy confirmed that he had died due to asphyxiation.
Gurpreet Kaur is lodged in the district jail in connection with the murder of her six-year-old son. Police allege that she conspired with her purported lover, Arpit Parashar, to kill the child. According to the allegations, Arpit lured the boy from outside his house in Ramraj village and slit his throat.
Damini, who is accused of conspiring with school bus conductor Tushar to murder her husband, Atul Singh, is also in jail. Atul ran the Krishna Kids Play School in Hastinapur.
Damini often becomes emotional while remembering her six-year-old son. As she is educated, she expressed a desire to work in the jail library and was assigned duties there.
Ravita's mother, Munesh Devi, visited the district jail on Monday to meet her daughter for the first time since she was sentenced to death in the Amit Kashyap murder case.
Munesh Devi, who travelled from Saidpur village in Muzaffarnagar district, became emotional during the meeting. Ravita broke down in tears, and the two spoke for nearly an hour.
Munesh Devi assured Ravita that the family stood by her and would challenge the trial court's verdict in the high court. Ravita asked her mother to arrange a meeting with her three children, who are living with their paternal grandmother, but Munesh Devi expressed helplessness over the request.
Divyansh, the brother of Sahil Shukla, visited the jail on Monday to meet him. The two spoke for a considerable time. The families in both murder cases have informed the jail administration in writing that they intend to appoint lawyers and appeal in the high court.
Senior Jail Superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma told Press Trust of India on Tuesday that Ravita's mother and Sahil's brother had visited the jail on Monday. He said preparations were under way to file appeals in the high court on behalf of Ravita, Amardeep, Muskan and Sahil.
Sharma said 63 women inmates were lodged in Meerut District Jail and housed in women's barracks 12-A and 12-B. The recent death sentences have brought attention to several of these inmates, though the cases against those still facing trial will be decided separately by the courts.
