Armed bandits have reportedly killed a resident, abducted five people and set harvested rice on fire during an attack on Farin Ruwa community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident was brought to public attention on Wednesday by security analyst Bakatsine, who described the attack as another setback for residents already struggling with insecurity and threats to their livelihoods.
According to the report, armed men stormed the community, seized several residents, killed some people and destroyed heaps of rice that farmers had harvested.
The attack comes amid concerns over reports that farmers in parts of Zamfara are being forced to pay large sums of money to bandits before they can harvest their crops.
One of the victims, identified as Saminu Adamu, was killed even after his family had paid a ransom to secure his release.
The assailants also destroyed his farm produce, compounding the loss suffered by his family.
Five other residents were abducted during the attack and remain in the custody of the armed men.
The individuals were identified as Abdulrahman Shehu, Mansur Muhammad, Idi Muhammad, Abdullahi Sani and Sani Usman.

As of the time of the report, there was no information on whether negotiations had begun to secure their release or whether security agencies had launched an operation to rescue them.
Reacting to the incident, Bakatsine questioned how farmers could provide for their families when they could not safely harvest the crops they had cultivated.
He also expressed concern over the continued hardship facing communities affected by banditry and called attention to the need for assistance.
