Colombo, October 18 (Daily Mirror) - Investigations are underway to determine whether an organised network is involved in the shooting and killing of wild elephants, following the death of the tusker ‘Kavantissa’.
The Ministry of Environment has submitted a written request to the Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate whether an organised group is operating behind the incidents involving the killing of wild elephants.
Although reports indicate that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting of elephants, including the tusker ‘Diana’, it has not yet been officially confirmed whether the suspect is linked to an organised network or whether the separate incidents are connected.
The Ministry has called for a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings and identify all those responsible.
The investigation is expected to examine whether there are links between the incidents and whether any individuals or groups are involved in the targeted killing of wild elephants.
Authorities have been urged to ensure that those found responsible are brought to justice.
