What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
After arriving in Ankara just before midday local time, Prime Minister Mark Carney was scheduled to kick off his whirlwind two-day trip to Türkiye with a visit to the Beştepe Presidential Compound, where, according to his itinerary, he was booked in for a tête-à-tête with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that, as per an advance briefing by senior government officials, was expected to focus on trade.
Back in the precinct, Bloc Québécois members are set to devote their first — and, depending on how the scheduling plays out, possibly only — designated supply day of the fall sitting to force a full day of debate — and, ultimately, a vote — on a non-binding call for the government to “uphold the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s decisions imposing levies on streaming services, as set out in the Broadcasting Act,” as well as “make the interim payment of $600 million promised to the cultural sector for the current year.” (10 a.m.)
Before that discussion gets underway, Bloc Québécois culture critic Martin Champoux will hit the House of Commons Foyer to brief reporters on the motion, which would also recognize that “culture is central to Quebec’s identity.” (9:30 a.m.)
Later this morning, Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel Garner will hold a press conference on an unspecified topic alongside her caucus colleague Brad Redekopp. (11 a.m.)
Outside the chamber, Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty is booked in for a one-hour session with INDIGENOUS AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS members as the committee begins its House-assigned review of her government’s plan to “ensure reliable access to clean and safe drinking water and effective treatment and disposal of wastewater on First Nation lands” while simultaneously recognizing the “inherent right” of First Nations to “make and enforce laws in relation to water, source water, drinking water, wastewater and related infrastructure.” (8:15 a.m.)
On the Senate side, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Information Minister Evan Solomon will field questions on the “impact of AI in Canada” during a morning appearance at SOCIAL AFFAIRS, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. (10:30 a.m.)
Also on the radar: Chief of Defence Staff Jennie Carignan will join 1st Canadian Division commander Wade Rutland and a Canadian Military Police Group official at the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre in Edmonton, Alta., to “provide an update on the incident that occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright” last weekend. (3 p.m. MDT)
ON AND AROUND THE HILL
Later this afternoon, Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden will hold a media availability outside the House of Commons to outline fresh federal support to “strengthen Canada’s sport system and build Canada strong through sport.” (1:15 p.m.)
OUTSIDE THE PRECINCT
Health Minister Marjorie Michel will highlight what the advisory is framing as an “investment in Canada’s research future” during a mid-morning visit to the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus at the University of Toronto, where, as per the advisory, she will reveal “the first recipients of the Canada Research Training Awards,” as well as the “most recent results of the federal government’s largest funding program for health research.” (11 a.m.)
Elsewhere in the city, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly will share the details of new federal support to boost “Canada’s venture capital ecosystem.” (1:30 p.m.)
IN THE CHAMBER
Later this afternoon, New Democrat MP Leah Gazan will kick off what could turn out to be the final round of debate on her backbench proposal to formally repeal a controversial section of the current federal labour code that effectively gives the federal labour minister the power to ask the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to order an end to a strike or lockout, after which the bill will be added to the queue to go to a make-or-break second reading vote next week. (5:30 p.m.)
