Korean solar power technology has been deployed to help address Tajikistan’s chronic power shortage. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. successfully completed a project to build solar power generation facilities and energy storage systems (ESS) in Tajikistan, which was funded through the South Korean government’s official development assistance (ODA), and held a completion ceremony.
The project was carried out as part of international development cooperation in the energy sector overseen by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT). Its core component was the installation of 3-megawatt (MW) solar power facilities and 0.5-megawatt-hour (MWh) energy storage systems in the Sughd and Gorno-Badakhshan regions of Tajikistan, respectively. This marks the first time that MW-scale power generation facilities have been built in Tajikistan.
Sughd and Gorno-Badakhshan have long suffered from unstable power supply, causing major inconvenience for local residents. With the completion of the project, living conditions for residents are expected to improve, while the stability of the country’s overall electricity supply is also likely to be enhanced. In particular, the project is being assessed as having established a practical foundation for the expansion of renewable energy deployment in the country.
KHNP devoted the technical expertise and project management capabilities it has built up through power generation projects at home and abroad to the project. By applying key equipment, including domestically produced solar modules, at the site, the company demonstrated the reliability of Korean technology. Demonstration data secured during the operation of the facilities is expected to be used as foundational material to help Korean companies strengthen their technological capabilities and advance into overseas markets in the future.
Kong Young-gon, head of KHNP’s Hydrogen Convergence Department, said, "This project has improved local power supply conditions while also strengthening the foundation for energy cooperation between Korea and Tajikistan," adding that the company would continue to expand new business opportunities in the Central Asian region.
