Football’s biggest individual awards will take centre stage on Monday, October 26, when the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place at the London Palladium. The event, scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. GMT (9:00 p.m. WAT), will be held in London for the first time as the prestigious award marks its 70th anniversary.
Created by France Football in 1956, the Ballon d’Or will honour outstanding performances across men’s and women’s football, alongside awards recognising young talents, goalkeepers, coaches and clubs. London’s selection as host city pays tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the inaugural men’s winner.
The men’s award is expected to be a closely contested race, with Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe among the leading contenders. Defending champion Ousmane Dembélé and 2024 winner Rodri are also on the 30-man shortlist.
Africa is represented on the 30-man shortlist by Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Senegal’s Sadio Mané, and the women’s Ballon d’Or will also be presented on the night.
Kane and Yamal lead the conversation
Kane has built a strong case following a remarkable 2025/26 season for Bayern Munich and England. The English striker scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country, helping Bayern secure domestic silverware before finishing third with England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The England captain scored six goals at the tournament and delivered one of the most prolific campaigns of his career. His goalscoring consistency, individual records and contribution to Bayern’s success strengthen his credentials as he seeks to become the first Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.
Yamal presents a different case, combining individual brilliance with team success. The Barcelona forward scored 16 league goals and provided 12 assists as the Catalan club retained the La Liga title.
Named La Liga’s Player of the Season, Yamal continued to establish himself as one of football’s most influential attacking talents. His ability to create chances, score goals and influence decisive moments has strengthened his position among the leading contenders.
His case also draws on his contribution to Spain’s World Cup-winning campaign, adding international success to an impressive club season.
Mbappe and other contenders
Mbappe’s claim rests heavily on his individual output. The Real Madrid forward scored 25 goals in La Liga and finished as the Champions League’s leading scorer with 15 goals. He also claimed the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup after scoring 10 goals for France.
His World Cup tally took him to 22 goals across the tournament’s history, making him the competition’s all-time leading scorer. However, France’s semi-final defeat to Spain and loss to England in the third-place match could influence how voters assess his campaign against those of Kane and Yamal.
Rodri, the 2024 winner, remains another contender after captaining Spain to the World Cup title and receiving the tournament’s Golden Ball as its best player.
Dembélé, meanwhile, is seeking to retain the award after another strong campaign with Paris Saint-Germain. His presence on the shortlist underlines the challenge facing the other contenders as they attempt to displace the reigning champion.
The race highlights a central question for voters: how should individual brilliance be weighed against team achievements and major trophies?
What could decide the award?
The Ballon d’Or voting criteria place individual performances and a player’s decisive impact first, followed by collective achievements and trophies, and then class and fair play.
A jury of specialist journalists representing the top 100 nations in FIFA’s men’s world rankings will select and rank 10 players from the 30-man shortlist. Points are awarded on a descending scale: 15 for a first-place selection, 12 for second, 10 for third, followed by eight, seven, five, four, three, two and one point.
The player with the highest overall points total will win the award.
The competing cases leave voters weighing Kane’s goalscoring and domestic success, Yamal’s influence in Barcelona’s title-winning campaign and Spain’s World Cup triumph, and Mbappé’s individual records and remarkable international scoring feat.
The outcome will be announced at the London ceremony, where the Women’s Ballon d’Or and other individual and team awards will also be presented.
