An angry mob has reportedly set a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus ablaze after it allegedly crushed a commercial motorcyclist to death at Ogolonto bus stop in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, October 16, sparking outrage among residents and other road users in the area, who allegedly attacked the vehicle and set it on fire following the motorcyclist’s death.
The development triggered tension at the busy bus stop as residents reacted to the fatal crash, with the situation reportedly escalating into violence against the BRT vehicle.
Police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps were said to have intervened to prevent further escalation and rescue the bus driver from the angry crowd, according to a report by The PUNCH.
Mob reportedly burns BRT bus after fatal crash
An X user, identified as @kinglammyjames, who shared details of the incident, described the scene and linked the burning of the bus to the death of the motorcyclist.
“Live at OGOLONTO.
“A bike man was crushed to death by the BRT Bus and in turn, the STREET BOYS burned down the BRT Bus,” the user wrote.
A trending video on X reportedly showed the incident. However, the full circumstances leading to the collision and the events immediately preceding the burning of the vehicle had yet to be independently established.
The identity of the deceased motorcyclist was not immediately available, while details of how the crash occurred remained unclear.
Circumstances of accident remain unclear
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official confirmation of the cause of the collision or whether the motorcyclist died at the scene.
It was also unclear whether the BRT bus was carrying passengers when the incident occurred, the number of people who might have been affected, or whether other vehicles were involved.
There was no immediate information on whether the bus driver sustained any injuries during the confrontation or whether any arrests had been made in connection with the burning of the vehicle.
The incident adds to concerns over the risk of mob violence following road accidents, particularly when anger over a fatality leads to the destruction of property and potential danger to other road users.
While the circumstances surrounding the crash require official clarification, the intervention of security personnel reportedly helped rescue the driver from the crowd.
Authorities are expected to establish the sequence of events that led to the motorcyclist’s death and the subsequent destruction of the BRT bus.
