Several people have died after a sudden burst of rainfall triggered a stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata.
According to ABP Ananda, 17 people were declared dead on arrival at Medical College Hospital in Kolkata, while more than 30 others have been admitted. More victims are being brought to the hospital, with some in critical condition, the channel reported, citing hospital sources.
Authorities have yet to establish the cause of the stampede. The pandal has been drawing large crowds since its opening, and local media reports had earlier flagged a shortage of volunteers to manage the surging footfall.
