The Turkish Football Federation on Tuesday appointed Sergen Yalçın as men’s national team coach, turning to a Turkish manager after two successive foreign coaches.
Yalçın, 53, and his staff will sign four-year contracts, the federation said in a statement.
He replaces Italian Vincenzo Montella, who was dismissed on October 9 after three years in charge. Montella had succeeded German coach Stefan Kuntz.
The former midfielder takes over a team that has lost all four of its UEFA Nations League matches this season, suffering two defeats to Italy and one each to France and Belgium.
Turkey also endured a disappointing 2026 World Cup, finishing bottom of its group with one win from three matches.
Yalçın spent his entire playing career in Turkey, including spells with İstanbul clubs Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, as well as Trabzonspor. He was the first player to represent all four clubs.
He scored five goals in 37 appearances for Turkey and played at the 1996 and 2000 European Championships before moving into coaching.
After spells at several smaller clubs, Yalçın led Beşiktaş to the Turkish league and cup double in the 2020-21 season. He became the first person in the club’s history to win the league title as both a player and a coach.
