SHILLONG, Oct 24: A farming awareness campaign in Meghalaya is encouraging farmers to improve soil health, adopt better agricultural practices and use suitable farm tools to reduce the physical demands of cultivation in the state’s hilly terrain.
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan Rabi Campaign, which began on October 22 and will continue until November 30, has reached farming communities in Ri-Bhoi and East Khasi Hills districts, with a focus on soil nutrient management, correcting soil acidity and promoting safer farming practices.
As part of the campaign, a group of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) visited Umsarang village in Ri-Bhoi’s Bhoirymbong Block, where 20 farmers, including 10 women, took part in an awareness programme.
Farmers were informed about the importance of soil testing to determine nutrient deficiencies and guide fertiliser application. The team also highlighted the role of liming in correcting soil acidity, a factor that can affect crop growth and the availability of nutrients.
The programme also focused on the use of appropriate farm tools and machinery, particularly for cultivation on sloping land, where agricultural work can be physically demanding and pose occupational health risks.
To encourage the adoption of improved practices, 20 small farm tools, 5 kg of French bean seeds and 5 kg of coriander seeds were distributed among the participating farmers.
The campaign also covered Puriang village in Mawrynkneng Block of East Khasi Hills, where 30 farmers participated. Women accounted for 27 of the participants, underlining their significant role in agricultural activities.
The initiative aims to provide farmers with practical knowledge to make informed decisions on soil management and farming operations, while reducing labour-intensive work and improving safety in the fields.
With activities scheduled across Meghalaya until November 30, the campaign seeks to promote sustainable farming practices and improve agricultural productivity through direct engagement with farming communities.
