How to solve ex-LIV pro ‘predicament?' One golfer's thoughtful take

It’s inevitable that Eddie Pepperell has questions about his 2027 playing schedule.

He’s on the bubble, after all, entering this week at No. 99 in the DP World Tour’s season-long rankings, with only the top 100 keeping full status for next season. His card-retaining fate rests in the hands of a couple players currently playing the final regular-season event, the Genesis Championship in South Korea.

But given the times it’s also inevitable he has questions about who else will be playing in 2027, too.

In a thoughtful post to his Substack (yes, a pro golfer with a Substack, a rare but fun crossover) Pepperell weighed in on a current central subplot of the professional golf ecosystem: What happens to golfers leaving LIV?

While LIV 2.0 may yet happen, the last few weeks have brought a parade of pros announcing their intentions to leave the bankrupt rebel circuit and rejoin golf’s traditional tours. Because the PGA Tour’s doors remain shut, at least for now, the DPWT seems to have become their de facto landing zone.

That, Pepperell writes, is the the foundation for the DPWT’s “predicament.” He adds that said predicament is “borne predominately and precariously out of weakness.”

I’ll link to the post here and again at the end, but Pepperell’s reflection made the rounds because he both loves the DPWT and is able to offer an unflinching look at its current dilemma. The league is losing money, it’s financially dependent on the PGA Tour, its TV revenues have declined and it’s hungry for star power. That last bit is where ex-LIV types could help, even if their reentry would raise the ire of some DPWT loyalists. And weakening a league that had become a direct competitor? That could help, too.

But where to draw the line?

That’s where Pepperell weighs in most forcefully.

“But, in rides Charles Howell III. Not somebody I had on my list of knights in shining armour for the DPWT,” he writes.

Howell is among those without any semblance of existing DPWT status who has announced he’ll be playing the circuit, suggesting a deal has been struck behind closed doors. Giving Howell and others this much credit, Pepperell writes, is a “miscalculation.” As for where he would draw the line?

“The Joaquin Niemanns of the world, Cam Smith, Bryson of course. Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton have their exemptions. Truthfully from my perspective not much else needed to be done, just ensure everybody else goes back to the qualifying school. The idea that Charles Howell III is on this list, with all due respect to Charles – he’s a terrific guy – is utterly bizarre.”

Pepperell made a point of posting the piece before his status is settled for 2027 because he didn’t want to be accused of sour grapes. But there are certain realities; a spot that goes to an ex-LIV pro could be used on someone who has shown more affinity for the DPWT than Howell, who went about a quarter-century between starts.

We don’t have to focus further on Howell, except to say that every player the DPWT picks up from LIV is one fewer player who can breathe life into its theoretical next chapter. But in yielding too aggressively to that line of thinking, Pepperell writes, you sacrifice something in terms of meritocracy.

In this era of golf, he concludes, decisions must be made in the “cold, murky domain” where business intersects with sport.

The whole thing is worth a read here.
