PETALING JAYA: The Attorney-General's Chambers will file an appeal against the Klang sessions court's decision to acquit political influencer Wan Azri Wan Deris of making a seditious statement against the government.
The AGC pointed out that the same sessions court had acquitted Wan Azri, also known as Papagomo, at the conclusion of the prosecution's case in September last year.
The High Court then ordered him to enter defence this year following an appeal by the prosecution.
"The accused then submitted his defence by giving a sworn statement at the same sessions court. As the only defence witness, he admitted issuing the statement as charged while his defence was a bare denial (that it was seditious).
"After studying the ruling of the sessions court judge, the AGC has decided to file a notice of appeal," it said in a statement.
Wan Azri was charged with saying that the government was “pro-Israel and pro-Western (countries)” through Facebook account “Halid Hamidi (Halid Mat Kool)” at about 1pm on Nov 8, 2023.
Earlier today, sessions court judge Siti Aminah Ghazali ruled that the prosecution failed to prove the charge against Wan Azri under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act beyond reasonable doubt.
