Shillong, October 15: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the newly constructed building of Synod College in Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills district, along with its library and interactive smart classrooms, aimed at strengthening educational infrastructure in the region.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Nongstoin, constructed at a cost of ₹31.05 crore. The facility is equipped with an emergency unit, labour room, intensive care unit (ICU), neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), operation theatre complex and laboratory.
The hospital is expected to improve access to specialised maternal and newborn healthcare, particularly for high-risk mothers and sick newborns, while reducing the need for patients to travel to Shillong for treatment.

Sangma also laid the foundation stone for widening the 6.84-km Sohpian–Nongstoin Road to intermediate-lane standard under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) for 2025–26.
The project is part of road investments worth ₹498.31 crore in and around Nongstoin, including the Nongstoin–Maweit–Nongjri road and village roads at Tiehsaw, Pyndengrei and Upper New Nongstoin.
In another initiative, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for developing the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Nongstoin, as a Centre of Excellence. Selected under the Ministry of Education’s second phase of the DIETs of Excellence programme for 2025–26, the initiative aims to strengthen teacher training, curriculum development, research and innovation.
