Milwaukee changed its NBA schedule because the Brewers created a once-in-a-generation Friday originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There are ordinary sports Fridays, and then there is what Milwaukee is about to experience on October 23. The city has an NBA home opener on the schedule, its first World Series game in 44 years coming later that evening and a sports community preparing for a celebration that could last well into the night.
The Milwaukee Bucks have decided that the occasion is so special that they are changing their own schedule to accommodate it. Instead of hosting the Chicago Bulls at 7 p.m. CT, the Bucks will begin their home opener at 3 p.m., allowing fans to turn their attention to the Brewers' World Series opener against Tampa Bay at 7 p.m.
It is not every day that an NBA franchise adjusts its schedule because the baseball team across town has accomplished something extraordinary. But the Brewers' return to the Fall Classic has created exactly that situation.
The Bucks made an unusual decision
The Bucks announced the schedule change after Milwaukee completed its sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. With the Brewers preparing to host their first World Series game since 1982, the NBA team recognized that a normal evening tipoff would create a significant conflict for local fans.
Clock out. Tip off. Cheer on! 🏀 Bucks home opener at 3 p.m. ⚾️ Watch party in Deer District at 7 p.m.

Working with the NBA, Milwaukee moved its game against Chicago four hours earlier. The change gives basketball fans a chance to watch the Bucks before turning their attention to one of the most anticipated baseball games in franchise history.
For ambitious fans attending both games, the arrangement creates an unusual doubleheader. Fiserv Forum and American Family Field are both located in Milwaukee, meaning someone could potentially attend an NBA game in the afternoon and a World Series game that evening.
Tickets, travel logistics and the timing of the basketball game's conclusion would still need to cooperate. Nevertheless, the possibility alone illustrates how extraordinary Friday could become for Milwaukee sports fans.
The Brewers are chasing something the Bucks already experienced
The Bucks know what a championship can mean to Milwaukee. Their 2021 NBA title, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, ended a 50-year championship drought and produced an enormous celebration throughout the city.
The Brewers are chasing an achievement they have never experienced. Milwaukee reached the World Series in 1982 but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. The franchise has spent the following decades trying to return, often competing against teams with significantly larger financial resources.
Now the Brewers have another opportunity, and their opponent makes the matchup even more fascinating. Tampa Bay has also never won a World Series, guaranteeing that one franchise will celebrate its first championship when the series concludes.
That creates an atmosphere considerably different from a championship series featuring perennial contenders. For Milwaukee fans, every game carries the possibility of something their city has never witnessed.

Milwaukee could have a sports day fans remember forever
The Bucks' decision is about more than television ratings or competing events. It reflects the unusual relationship between professional sports franchises and the communities they represent. When one team reaches a historic moment, the celebration can extend well beyond that particular sport.
Milwaukee's sports calendar has suddenly become a shared occasion. Basketball fans have their home opener, baseball fans have the World Series, and those who follow both teams have a Friday that might require clearing their entire schedule.
There is also a wonderful contrast between the two franchises. The Bucks have recently reached the summit of professional basketball, while the Brewers are still searching for their first baseball championship. Both organizations will have an opportunity to celebrate with their supporters on the same day.
The Bucks will still want to beat Chicago, and the Brewers will still need to handle a dangerous Tampa Bay team. Neither outcome is guaranteed. But the schedule itself has already become part of the story.
Milwaukee does not need to choose between basketball and baseball on Friday. Thanks to an unusual decision by the Bucks, the city has a chance to enjoy both.
