ALOR SETAR: Three teenagers were injured after a flag carried during the Tokong Sayur procession allegedly came into contact with a high-voltage power line in Mergong here tonight.
The incident is believed to have occurred about 9pm when thousands of participants were taking part in the procession along the main road in Mergong.
The flag, reportedly held by one of the teenagers, was blown by strong winds during light rain before coming into contact with the power line, causing all three teenagers to fall.
The victims, aged 16 and 17, were taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB), where they were treated in the red zone.
Mergong Tokong Sayur Association secretary Chah Boon Chuan said the annual procession was being held today, with tonight marking its fourth day.
"We usually hold the procession on the fourth day from 8pm to 11pm.
"I was not at the scene when the incident happened and only learnt about it after being informed by participants," he told reporters outside HSB's Emergency Department tonight.
Boon Chuan said the victims were likely still in school based on their ages.
He said the teenagers were receiving treatment and being monitored by doctors.
"I do not know their condition yet as they are still in the red zone," he said.
Earlier, a video circulated on social media showing the injured teenagers lying on the road while other procession participants came to their aid.
