IMPHAL, Oct 11: A community leaders’ peace and unity meeting was held today at Tengnoupal at the initiative of MLA Letpao Haokip.
Leaders from different communities and former Members of the Autonomous District Council (ADC), Chandel took part in the programme.
They also held a peace meeting at Gaby’s Cafe, Tengnoupal.
Former ADC Members and community leaders attending the meeting expressed deep concern over the prolonged violence and its impact on the lives of common people.
They appealed to all sections of society to shun violence and give peace a chance.
They said that violence has only brought suffering, displacement and loss of lives and properties.
They further appealed to the Government and civil society organisations to take sincere steps for lasting peace.
Addressing the event, MLA Letpao Haokip said that the prolonged conflict and violence have taken a heavy toll on the people and have pushed development backward.
“If at all we have to wage a war, we should wage war against poverty, illiteracy and hunger, not against each other”, Letpao said.
Saying that the real enemies of society are poverty, lack of education and unemployment, not each other, Letpao Haokip asserted that people should unite and fight for better education, better healthcare and livelihood for the youth, instead of fighting among communities.
He also appealed to the youth not to be misled by divisive forces, but to channel their energy towards education and Nation-building.
The programme concluded with a call for peace, unity and collective efforts for development.
