A special executive magistrate in Delhi today ordered the release of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka after their judicial custody expired in connection with an October 14 protest at Jantar Mantar.
The two leaders were produced before the magistrate, where their sureties were also submitted during the proceedings.
Das and Ranka were initially remanded to five days of judicial custody on October 14 after being detained for allegedly entering the denotified protest site at Jantar Mantar and violating peace bonds.
Their custody was extended by two days on October 19 and was due to expire today (21 October).
Earlier today, the Delhi High Court refused to intervene in their judicial custody, asking them to await the special executive magistrate's decision and approach the appellate court if their grievances persisted.
Following the High Court's decision, Das and Ranka withdrew their plea challenging the extension of their judicial custody.
The two leaders, along with other CJP workers, had displayed the national flag and raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the site before being detained and placed under preventive arrest on 13 October.
