(ANSA) - ROME, 21 OTT - Some 500 paratroopers from the crack Folgore Brigade are to be deployed in Milan following last weekend's shocking youth riots there and drone specialists may also be included, officials said Wednesday.
Their assignment, lasting from the coming days through the end of the year, will fall under the legal framework of the longstanding 'Safe Streets' ('Strade Sicure') project and they will not, as initially planned, be given judicial police powers following an objection from President Sergio Mattarella.
The Prefect of Milan, in consultation with the Police Commissioner (Questore), will determine how they are utilized based on operational needs—tasks that may range from patrolling to static surveillance.
There is no fixed ratio mandated between the use of these paratroopers—who are strictly limited to public security functions—and the deployment of regular law enforcement officers, the latter of whom also possess judicial police powers.
It is also understood that the deployment may include military personnel specialized in operating drones. (ANSA).
