Timothy Munzhelele, a member of Faranani Athletic Club, was involved in the incident roughly 2km before the finish line on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Despite the encounter, he crossed the finish line before receiving treatment from the event's emergency medical team.
Munzhelele was subsequently taken to Unjani Clinic for an initial assessment and later transferred to Mankweng Hospital for further examination. X-rays conducted at the hospital revealed no fractures or significant internal injuries.
Venda Athletic Club responds to incident
Race organisers Venda Athletic Club issued a formal statement addressing both the incident and the safety measures in place on the day. The club confirmed that 66 marshals, two traffic police vehicles, one police vehicle and two emergency vehicles had been deployed along the route.
According to the organisers, the vehicle involved came to a stop at the scene and the driver provided assistance to Munzhelele before he continued to the finish line. The club confirmed the matter was reported to police under case number 136/10/2026 and expressed gratitude to those who helped the athlete. It also reaffirmed that participant safety remained central to its events.
Outrage on social media after video incident
The video footage circulating online has prompted sharply divided reactions. A Facebook user identified as Vho OrLivern claimed the driver struck Munzhelele from behind and left without stopping, urging police to act. On X, another user raised similar concerns, asking:
"Did he stop or was it hit and run?"
A separate commenter questioned conduct on both sides, arguing that runners should face oncoming traffic and that the driver could also have moved further away from the athlete.
