The use of forex to import maize from Zambia has come under scrutiny, with the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (Pac) asking the government to fund the Greenbelt Authority (GBA)’s irrigation programme to boost local production and reduce reliance on imported grain.
Pac chairperson Steven Malondera questioned the government’s spending priorities after GBA officials disclosed that the authority had yet to receive funding for its planned irrigation programme, despite the approval of a K2.5 billion budget for the 2026-27 financial year.
