Manchester United transfer plans point to major defensive overhaul
Manchester United are already mapping out significant work for next summer, with the club’s defensive rebuild moving rapidly up the agenda after another worrying start to the season. According to INews, senior figures at Old Trafford accept that the back line should have been addressed more decisively in the last window, and that acknowledgement now appears to be shaping recruitment plans for 2027.
The early season picture has left little room for debate. United have looked vulnerable too often, with the lack of clean sheets underlining wider structural issues across the defence. Recruitment resources were directed elsewhere in the summer, particularly into midfield, and the consequences have quickly become clear. The burden on experienced options has remained high, while the squad’s balance has looked imperfect from the opening weeks.
There is a strong sense that this is no minor adjustment. The club’s recruitment team are understood to be laying the groundwork for substantial change, particularly at left-back and centre-back, where both availability and long-term suitability are under review.

Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire futures under scrutiny
Among the most notable strands in the report is the uncertainty surrounding Lisandro Martinez. It is understood that the Argentina international had been weighing up his future even before the recent tension involving Jason Wilcox and members of the hierarchy. Interest from Spain remains active, with Atletico Madrid previously linked and other La Liga clubs also attentive to his situation.
Martinez’s contract position gives United some control, because the club can activate an additional year and seek a fee. Even so, the suggestion within the piece is that United may ultimately choose to move on if the player is minded to leave, especially if removing his salary from the wage bill helps create room for reinvestment.
Harry Maguire’s outlook appears steadier. United are expected to trigger the option in his contract, and there is clear appreciation internally for his leadership role. He may no longer be viewed as the long-term cornerstone of the defence, but he remains trusted within the dressing room and valued for the support he provides younger players such as Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro.
Luke Shaw’s position is more finely balanced. His current deal is also nearing its end, and any extension would seemingly depend on a reduced package from his present £200,000-a-week terms. United are expected to monitor how he comes through the demands of a packed schedule before making a final judgement. That feels sensible, especially given the repeated availability concerns that have affected planning for several seasons.
Lewis Hall and Adrien Truffert on Manchester United radar
Left-back looks set to be one of the clearest priorities. Lewis Hall remains a player of firm interest after United missed out previously, with Newcastle United’s valuation and reluctance to sell proving decisive. The latest reporting indicates United could return next summer, and there is confidence that Hall’s openness to the move has not faded.
The logic is easy to follow. Hall brings Premier League familiarity, athleticism and long-term upside, all of which fit the profile Ineos have tried to establish in the market. The comparison with Carlos Baleba in the report is revealing, because it points to a strategy of patience rather than panic. United believe timing and discipline matter, even when an immediate need is obvious.
Adrien Truffert is another name firmly in the frame. Bournemouth’s full-back has been admired for some time and is expected to attract wide interest if he becomes available. That likely means any move would be competitive and potentially expensive, but United’s need in the position is sufficiently clear that they are expected to stay involved.
Centre-back recruitment plans depend on Matthijs De Ligt recovery
Central defence will also be a major focus. Much may depend on Matthijs De Ligt’s fitness after a frustrating injury period that has lasted longer than anticipated. His return to the squad for the draw at Leeds offered some encouragement, and there is hope internally that he can re-establish the level he showed when fully fit.
Even with that optimism, the expectation is that United will recruit at least one centre-back, with scope for another if Martinez departs. That points to a broader reshaping rather than a one-off addition. Heaven and Yoro are both regarded as key parts of the future, but the club appear to recognise that development pathways are best protected by stronger depth and better specialist options around them.
The report also notes frustration around Heaven being used at full-back in the recent defeat to Atletico, which speaks to the lack of specialist cover in wide defensive areas. Internally, he is viewed primarily as a central defender and part of the next generation, not a long-term solution out wide.
January transfer window remains an option if results worsen
For now, the main planning appears centred on next summer, but January has not been completely ruled out. If performances and results continue to deteriorate, United could look to act sooner. That would be a significant call, particularly in a market where value is often difficult to find mid-season, yet defensive shortcomings can force clubs into uncomfortable decisions.
The broader takeaway is that United are no longer treating the issue as a marginal concern. The defence has become a central project, and the club’s next major transfer phase is likely to reflect that reality. Hall, Truffert and at least one centre-back are prominent themes, while Martinez, Shaw and Maguire each sit in different contractual and sporting situations. It all points to a summer window that could redefine the shape of Manchester United’s back line.
Our View
This is the kind of report that feels frustrating and encouraging in equal measure. Frustrating, because everyone could see the imbalance in the squad months ago. Encouraging, because there finally seems to be a proper acceptance that the defence needs serious attention, not a temporary fix and not another gamble on patching things up.
Lewis Hall would feel like a smart move if it can be done. He looks modern, energetic and ready for a big role. Truffert also sounds like the right sort of profile, a player with scope to improve and value to protect. That is the market United should be living in, signing players before they become completely unattainable.
The biggest issue is making sure this turns into action. Too many summers have passed with obvious needs left unresolved. If Martinez wants to go, move decisively. If Shaw cannot be relied upon over a full season, be honest about it. If Maguire stays, use him properly as an experienced squad figure. Build around Yoro, support Heaven, and give De Ligt every chance to recover into a stable setup rather than a chaotic one.
There is still enough here to believe the defence can be reshaped well. The key is conviction. Make the hard calls early, recruit with purpose, and stop asking the same fragile unit to somehow provide different results.
