JD Vance's face turns bright red as Trump delivers telling response when asked for his 2028 endorsement in embarrassing Oval Office moment

Donald Trump refused to endorse JD Vance as he stood behind him in the Oval Office on Tuesday.

Trump was asked about an interview Vance gave the day before where he said he believed the president would endorse him if he ran in 2028.

'Well, I tell you this, he's a very talented person,' Trump said. 'And he's a very good person, but I literally - I don't think we've ever talked about.'

Vance standing behind him, said: 'No, sir. I said that too.'

The vice president's face appeared to turn red and he laughed as the focus in the room turned to him.

Trump continued: 'I don't talk about it with him, he doesn't talk about it with me. It's early. We are very early right now, we have to get through the midterms, we'll see how it goes.'

Trump has repeatedly stopped short of anointing Vance his successor. He hedged in August by describing the vice president as the likely favorite but also floated Marco Rubio as a potential running mate.

Vance on Monday told veteran Washington journalist Mark Halperin, 'Look, I think I run, the president will endorse me ... but I don't know, man, I haven't talked to him about it.'

The vice president has been cagey about announcing his 2028 intentions, telling CBS News just days ago that he hadn't made any decision.

'We've got four little kids, my wife has never loved politics,' Vance said.

'Anything could happen.'

Vance remains the favorite to secure the Republican nomination in 2028, but his odds have slipped.

Traders on Polymarket gave him a 43.8 percent chance on Tuesday, down from roughly 53 percent on September 3.

Winning the White House is another matter, with prediction market Kalshi putting his chances at 22 percent. Those figures reflect traders' bets, not voter polling.

The more immediate test comes in the November 3 midterms, with Republicans  facing the very real prospect of losing both congressional chambers.

A new New York Times/Siena poll gives Democrats an 11-point advantage among likely voters choosing between House candidates in their districts, although control of the Senate hinges on a series of closely fought state races.

For Vance, the results will offer a measure of the country's appetite for another Republican administration, and a test of whether Trump's MAGA brand remains a winner.

Vance and his wife Usha welcomed their fourth child, a son named Alec Neel, on July 19, joining older siblings Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.
