The Management of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has suspended all academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing indefinitely following the death of a student, Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo.
The decision was announced in a notification issued on Tuesday and signed by the Coordinator of Programme and Head of School, Dr Taiwo Omirin, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director.
The suspension affects students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sets, including master’s student nurses and those undergoing orientation at the institution.
As part of the directive, students residing in the school’s hostel were ordered to vacate the facility with immediate effect.
The management said the decision became necessary following Taiwo’s death, which reportedly triggered unrest within the hospital community.
“This decision follows the unfortunate demise of Student Nurse Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo, which has reportedly resulted in student unrest within the hospital community,” the notification stated.
According to the management, the suspension is intended to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
It urged affected students and other stakeholders to remain calm and comply strictly with the directive pending further communication.
The hospital also expressed regret over the inconvenience the suspension might cause, particularly for students whose academic programmes have been disrupted by the development.
Student’s death sparks unrest
Taiwo’s death reportedly sparked protests among fellow students, who raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident and the response to his medical emergency.
The deceased, a Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing student, was said to be asthmatic and reportedly died at the institution under circumstances that have generated controversy within the school community.
Following the incident, fellow students allegedly questioned the handling of his emergency, raising concerns about whether adequate and timely medical attention was provided.
The allegations have prompted calls for an investigation to establish the events leading to his death and determine whether there were any shortcomings in the response to his medical condition.
However, the circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be conclusively established, and the allegations of negligence remain unverified.
The management’s decision to suspend academic activities indefinitely comes amid the reported unrest and growing concerns among students over the incident.
Concerns over emergency medical response
The controversy has also drawn attention to the emergency medical arrangements available to students at the institution, particularly those who may experience sudden or life-threatening health complications.
Asthma can cause breathing difficulties that may require urgent medical attention, depending on the severity of an attack. The circumstances surrounding Taiwo’s reported medical emergency have therefore become a major concern among his colleagues.
Students are seeking clarity on the events that preceded his death and the nature of the medical response he received.
An eyewitness also reportedly alleged that Taiwo’s death was the second involving a student at the institution this year.
The allegation has raised further concerns among members of the school community, with calls for the reported incidents to be examined to establish whether they share any common circumstances.
The claim has not been independently established, and further information would be required to determine the details of the alleged earlier death.
Management seeks peaceful environment for investigation
In its notification, the hospital management said the suspension was necessary to create an environment conducive to investigating the circumstances surrounding Taiwo’s death.
The directive affects students across the two specified academic sets, including those who may have been preparing for lectures, clinical training and other programme-related activities.
The order for resident students to leave the hostel immediately also requires affected students to make alternative accommodation arrangements while awaiting further instructions.
The management, however, did not specify a date for the resumption of academic activities or indicate how long the suspension would remain in force.
It instead asked students and other stakeholders to comply with the directive and remain calm pending further communication.
The indefinite suspension means the affected students will have to wait for an official announcement before returning to their academic activities.
Students await further directives
The development has left students and other members of the school community awaiting further information on the investigation and the circumstances that led to the management’s decision.
The immediate priority remains establishing what happened before and during Taiwo’s medical emergency, while addressing the concerns raised by fellow students.
A thorough investigation could help clarify the sequence of events, establish the facts surrounding the death and determine whether any administrative or medical response requires review.
The hospital management has yet to announce when academic activities will resume or provide further details on the investigative process.
For now, all academic activities at the School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing remain suspended indefinitely, while affected students have been directed to comply with the management’s instructions pending further notice.
